Home of the world-famous swans, Ulysses and Penelope

Ulysses, Penelope, and their first two cygnets, just hours before Ulysses was maimed.

September 1, 2003: One of the swans has disappeared from the lake. The remaining swan will not come close enough to anybody to discern whether it is Ulysses or Penelope. There are rumours that the missing swan was "exterminated" and it is presumed at this point that the missing swan is Ulysses.

January 26, 2003: Ulysses and Penelope have been wintering safely (so far) on the Farmington River where they have been able to migrate because Ulysses has regained the capability to fly. A pair of younger swans, presumably offspring from another clutch, has joined them on the river. The swans are enjoying a peaceful winter on the river.

September 29, 2002: Ulysses flew across the lake and his wing injury is apparently improving!!! It appears as though the injury may have been in his breast plate or ribs. Ulysses is now holding his wings evenly and is flying, though with some effort. Ulysses now has a chance at surving the winter without human intervention because he will be able to fly to the river once the lake freezes. This is contrary to the opinions of many experts that evaluated his injury.

July 11, 2002: This photo of the swan family wins honorable mention in the American Humane Association's photo contest: http://www.AmericanHumane.org

July 11, 2002: The Farmington swans have been enjoying a peaceful summer on their lake since the lake was closed to access from people after their tragic episodes this spring. Penelope did not attempt a second clutch as some thought she might.

Who would ever want to hurt any of these gentle creatures?

But, this is what HUMANS have done to them:

  • Beaten the cob to the point where he is crippled and cannot use his wings to fly and is afraid to guard his territory.
  • Stolen four out of seven eggs from their nest.
  • Killed a one week old cygnet.
  • (Apparently) Defiled their nest by putting animal feces in and around it.
  • Stolen the remaining two cygnets from the pen, leaving her with no offspring from the clutch.

How would you feel, if people had done this to your family?
