The Story of Sugar The Wonder Dog
| Hi, my name is Sugar. I am a Samoyed. Although commonly thought to be, Samoyeds are not Huskies. Samoyeds are originally from the Northwestern area of Siberia, where the eskimos in the arctic regions bred and trained us to help them in the harsh climate they had to survive. The Samoyede eskimos, who the Samoyed breed is named after, depended upon us to help them in their work and to keep them warm at night. It was very common for Samoyeds to share the same living and sleeping quarters as the Samoyede eskimos. Because of this close knit relationship, Samoyeds were selected for breeding based on their personality traits that were conducive to getting along in close quarters with the eskimos. This is why most Samoyeds that you find will be friendly, affable, smart, and eager to please you. The Samoyed breed is rated in the top five for the smartest canines. These are just a few of the reasons that the Samoyede eskimos prized their Samoyed dogs so highly. The proper enunciation of "Samoyed" is "Sam-uh-yed", but we don't mind you saying it the other way. I met up with
Chris in 1994 in Dayton, Ohio when I was just one year
old. I was given my name by my original owners who were
very sorry to have to give me away because of the
behavioral problems I had early on. But, I worked a lot
with Chris to straighten these things out and now
everybody likes me!!! Hopefully, the original owners
might see this web page and will be happy to learn that
things have worked out OK for me. I have traveled all
over the Eastern United States since meeting Chris. I like to hang out at the barn and to go on trail rides with the horses. I get along great with horses and will even eat grass besides them as they graze. They seem to be put at ease when they see me grazing when I am around them. I especially like the horse shows because of all of the people that give me attention there. Everybody knows Sugar at the horse show! The only thing that I like better than the horse show, is when the snow comes down two feet at a time!!! I love the cold weather and am perfectly comfortable in the cold, even at sub-zero temperatures. |
