| Integrating
jazz with musical stylings from the spectrum of
music including Classical, Latin, African,
Indian, Asian, and the world music flavors from
every conceivable jazz derivative and variation
of folk music from around the world, world jazz
is the ultimate synthesis of musical form. World
Jazz does not have a specific sound or style as
it encompasses the integration of any and all
available styles. World Jazz is at the forefront,
avant garde, of musical exploration. Its mastery
is dauntingly elusive because musicians must not
only be proficient in jazz, but also in many
other styles and forms of music. |
Spanning
a wide and diverse array of styles of music from
Latin America, many deriving from Classical,
Spanish, and Flamenco music, as well as native
folk music indigenous to the different regions of
Latin America, Latin Jazz is a microcosm of music
unto itself that spans Afro-Cuban Jazz, Bossa
Nova, Caribbean, Brazilian, and many other
distinguishable styles and forms from across
Latin America. Latin Jazz generally traces its
origins to Dizzy Gillespie who first integrated
Afro-Cuban rhythms into jazz in the mid-20th
century. |
Claiming
perhaps the oldest heritage outside of the
Classical paradigm, Gypsy music is a predecessor
to World Fusion because it integrated styles of
music from everywhere that Gypsies traveled.
Gypsy Jazz, a.k.a., Gypsy Swing, evolved as a
consequence of the Gypsy culture colliding with
early Swing music in the 1920's and 1930's in
Europe, most notably in France when Django
Reinhardt fused Gypsy music with Swing with his
legendary Hot Club of France ensemble. Gypsy
Swing has undergone a concerted revival in recent
years, regaining popularity in both Europe and
the Americas. |
A
guitar-centric form of Spanish music, generally
acknowledged to have originated in and around the
Andalusian region of Spain, Flamenco music is a
highly animated form of music that draws largely
from Classical music but also integrates elements
of style from other styles of music, such as
Spanish folk and Gypsy music. Modern Flamenco
guitar is undergoing a revolution, or evolution,
depending upon perspective, where the Nueavou
Flamenco style is integrating traditional
Flamenco with other styles of music including
Jazz, Latin, and World Music. |

| This
section explores the roots of jazz throughout the
20th century from the original jazz innovators
through the legendary musicians that defined and
redefined the boundaries of jazz as we generally
perceive them today. These innovative musicians
laid the foundations of jazz that have been built
upon by subsequent musicians. |
This
section explores the contemporary jazz musicians
of the latter part of the 20th century through
the modern day. Contemporary jazz musicians
continue to push the boundaries of jazz by
exploring directions and paths deriving from
their predecessors. This section bears some
overlap to the others delineated, though not all
contemporary jazz has the focus on world music,
as does World Jazz. |
Salsa
is a form of predominantly Latin music that has
gained a strong following among mainstream
listeners due to the rhythmic intensive
integration of Afro-Latin influences, as well as
the easily accessible format that makes it
suitable for mainstream audiences. Salsa is
itself a fusion of styles of Latin music and it
is continually evolving to integrate new styles,
including jazz. |
Listeners
amd musicians that love world fusion are happy to
see the seeds of the movement fall wherever they
may. Whether it be pop, rock, country, bluegrass,
folk, dance, or any other style of music, the
synthesis of world fusion is taking root
throughout the musical kaleidescope. Be it
Santana, Shakira, or Los Van Van, World Fusion is
gaining momentum across the music industry. |

| Many
musicians distinguish themselves with
extraordinary skills over their instrument(s)
that set them apart from other musicians. These
virtuosos possess skill, craft, and artistry with
their instrument(s) that serves as a model for
others to strive. This section explores the
modern day virtuosos that have achieved mastery
over tonal and conventional percussive
instruments. |
Many
of the musical styles that have derived from Afro-Latin
music or otherwise integrated African rhythms,
make extensive use of African percussive
instruments, such as congas, bongos, djembas.
This section explores the musicians that have
mastered these percussive instruments. |
The
electric guitar exploded as an instrument of
choice for many mainstream and jazz musicians in
the 20th Century. This section explores the
diverse areas of music that electric guitar has
ventured, as well as the new styles that have
evolved with acoustic guitar. |
